Association for Women in Science: “Effective Communication Tips and Techniques”

In continuing our efforts to promote professional development at Berkeley Lab, the Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) has partnered with Cindy Simpson from the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) to host a workshop entitled, “Effective Communication Tips and Techniques.

The learning objectives of the Effective Communication Tips and Techniques workshop are to provide participants with:

• an understanding of the different influencing factors that inhibit effective communication;
• a review of the techniques that can be employed relating to verbal and nonverbal communication;
• a comprehensive approach on how to improve their communications style.

The two workshops will be held on:

Effective Communication Tips and Techniques by Cindy Simpson

Ineffective communication skills can hamper individuals as they are navigating through their professional careers while trying to reach their goals and objectives. During this workshop tips and techniques that can be utilized by the participant, no matter where they may be in their career, will be shared. Interactive exercises will be employed to assist attendees in better understanding and enhancing their style of communication with suggestions that can be implemented immediately or in the future to ensure continued success in their personal and professional life.

Cynthia L. Simpson, M.Ed, CGMP, CAE

Cynthia Simpson, M.Ed, CAE is the Chief Business Development Officer with the Association for Women in Science (AWIS).  Ms. Simpson is responsible for developing and overseeing all business development aspects for AWIS, with emphasis on corporate and institution partnerships.  In addition, she has presented over 100 workshops on topics of importance to women in STEM at universities, corporations, and professional societies. Ms. Simpson has co-authored various publications including “Mentoring Postdoc Women from an Institutional Perspective” in From Ph.D. to Professoriate book and “Work-Life and Childcare Resources for Postdoc Women” in Advancing Postdoc Women Guidebook. Both books are published by the National Postdoctoral Association. She is a graduate of Syracuse University with a B.S. in Business Management and George Mason University with a M.Ed. in Curriculum Instruction and Design.   She is a member of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives and the American Society of Association Executives.
