On September 27-28, 2016, Berkeley Lab participated in the inaugural UC Diversity Leaders Retreat in Newport Beach, CA. Approximately 90 diversity leaders, practitioners, faculty members, students, and administrators from UC’s ten campuses and three locations came together to discuss best practices in building diversity, equity, engagement, and inclusion. According to the UC Office of the President (UCOP), this year’s theme was “Linking Diversity Leaders: Building an equity-centered UC community through leadership”, with the retreat serving as a “professional learning and collective action space to support ongoing and new efforts to improve campus climate across the system.” Christel Cantlin and Lady Idos from Berkeley Lab’s Diversity and Inclusion Office were in attendance (pictured, bottom right).
Welcome and opening remarks were provided by Yvette Gullatt, Vice Provost for Diversity and Engagement at UCOP; keynote address by Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law at UC Irvine; and closing remarks by Douglas Haynes, Chair of the UC Council of Chief Diversity Officers (pictured, top left). Concurrent sessions focused on the undergraduate, graduate, staff, and faculty experiences, with roundtable discussions on the following topics: communications and fundraising, data collection and diversity, Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), and new thoughts/ frames/ ideas. Additionally, participants engaged in location-specific strategy sessions to advance diversity efforts at the local level.
