Mentors Needed for Spring Mentoring
When: Spring 2020 – Beginning February
What: We are partnering with Pilot City to provide students an opportunity to conduct a small project this spring. Mentors will provide a project for students to complete in their classrooms over a six week period. High School teachers will guide students with the help of their LBNL mentor. Mentors are expected to meet with the high school teacher during their visit to the Lab on February 18 (2 hours; lunch provided) and correspond via physical visit, email and/or video with students (~1 hour a week over six weeks). Additional time will be needed to prepare the project.
Teachers have an interest in partnering with the following subject areas:
- Environmental Science
- Biotechnology
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer Science

BLISS Kit Training
When: Friday, February 28, 2020, 9:00 am and 1:00 pm
What: Volunteers interested in learning how to facilitate BLISS KIT modules should attend this session. Sessions are two hours in length and will cover module content, science communication, and classroom management. Sessions will take place in the fourth week of each month. MESA Day – March 7
MESA is a college and career prep engine that propels student diversity and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math. On MESA day, teams of high schoolers compete in engineering design challenges. Berkeley Lab volunteers will be holding demonstrations between challenges.

Nuclear Science Day – March 21
We will be celebrating our 10th annual Nuclear Science Day for Scouts event at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on Saturday, March 21, 2020. This full-day event is designed for Girl Scouts and BSA youths. Educational activities include: a tour of the ALS, detection of cosmic rays, and investigation of radioactivity in our daily lives.

Reverse Science Fairs – March through May
Remember the science fairs of your youth? The board, the glue, fancy pictures, and dioramas. Would you like another chance at moving up from honorable mention to first prize? This spring, Berkeley Lab will be testing out our own traveling science fair. We are looking for LBNL employees willing to share their science and/or ways they support science in an accessible platform for middle and high school students. Workshops will take place to help the development of boards and small demonstrations The K-12 office will support the purchase of materials.

SAGE-S Summer Camp
SAGE-S (Science Accelerating Girls’ Engagement in STEM) is a week long summer camp during August 2 – 8, 2020 that aims to foster innovation, grow the STEM community, and engage intelligent, creative, and passionate young women. This year, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab will be a host in addition to SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We are looking for staff members to participate in planning this program.
