March is Women’s History Month – a letter from Horst Simon & Susan Hubbard

Dear Colleagues,

March is Women’s History Month, and we are excited to share important resources and invite you to upcoming events at Berkeley Lab to commemorate the remarkable achievements and impacts of women at the Lab and beyond. As the executive sponsors of the Women Scientists and Engineers Council (WSEC), we are proud to support WSEC, the Lab’s first ERG, and greatly value the role that it has played in advancing women’s participation and leadership in science, engineering and beyond at Berkeley Lab.

Our Women’s History Month celebration will include the fourth “Women @ The Lab” virtual awards ceremony. Please join us on Tuesday, March 30th, at 3pm as we honor the achievements of 15 scientists, engineers and operations staff here at Berkeley Lab.

The month’s events will end on March 31 with a 12:30 pm talk by Dr. Mayra Padilla, the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness & Equity at Contra Costa College. It will be co-hosted by WSEC and the Latin American and Native American (LANA) Employee Resource Group (ERG) to highlight the importance of intersectionality and inter-ERG partnerships. Look for event details and many other resources on the WSEC webpage and in Elements.

And finally, note that today, March 8, is International Women’s Day 2021. This year’s campaign theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which asks everyone to commit to calling out gender bias and inequality to help create an inclusive world. Join us to show solidarity with creating an inclusive environment at Berkeley Lab and globally.

Best Regards,

Horst Simon, Deputy Lab Director for Research

Susan Hubbard, Associate Lab Director for Earth and Environmental Sciences
