“Veterans’ Day on the Job” Hosted by VERG on May 20

IMG_0239Berkeley Lab’s Veteran Employee Resource Group (VERG) and the Diversity and Inclusion Office recently hosted a “Veterans’ Day on the Job” event for participants in the NPower program.  NPower is a national program, with a Bay Area chapter serving veterans who are eager to transfer their military experience and develop new skills toward a career in technology.  The free Technology Service Corps program offers the following curriculum: CompTIA A+ Certification, Active Directory, ITIL, and ServiceNow.

Their visit on May 20, 2016 included a tour of the supercomputers in Wang Hall; a “veteran’s perspective” talk by Steve Nobles in the IT Division; a professional development workshop facilitated by Sr. Recruiter Jeff Todd; and a networking session with VERG members to share perspectives and discuss potential opportunities for future employees at the Lab.  Laleh Coté and Tokiwa Smith from Workforce Development & Education (WD&E) also shared information about internship opportunities.  Click here to view photos.

This initiative is a part of VERG’s commitment to reach out to the veteran community, and ensure a veteran-friendly work environment for employees and prospective applicants.  VERG is open to all employees at the Lab, with Facilities Division Director Reva Nickelson serving as the Executive Sponsor.  For more information, please contact VERG Co-Chairs Phil Weiss (pweiss@lbl.gov) or Rich Celestre (rscelestre@lbl.gov).
